February of 2020 is the 57th year of “American Heart Month” – a month to focus on lowering the number of deaths each year from heart disease. The original proclamation regarding Heart Month was made by President Lyndon Johnson Dec. 20, 1963, and has carried forward through to Pres. Trump.
Newnan CPR committed in 2013 to offer “Free Hands-Only CPR Training” (non-certification CPR instruction) all over our service area. So, for 2020, this will be our 8th year offering this program. We only ask that a city or community provide a location, and advertise the courses.
American Heart Association estimates worldwide deaths from cardiovascular disease will grow to 23 million per year by 2030. That is a sad number. 
Slightly more than 1,000 people per day suffer sudden cardiac arrest in the U.S., and over 85% of them die from it. Cardiac arrest is the full stoppage of heart function. Most resuscitation experts believe 2/3 of people having cardiac arrest could survive. But, it would take bystanders quickly performing CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), and fast use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) to shock the victim’s heart back to a normal rhythm.
That’s why we do this training (non-certification) during February. We simply hope to try to move towards that 2/3 goal of cardiac arrest survival. Training includes CPR, choking and using an AED. You will learn the skills to save a life (you won’t get a certification card to carry in your wallet – but that doesn’t save anyone).
