This February is the 60th year of “American Heart Month”. In February, we concentrate efforts on the leading cause of death for men and women in the U.S. This started with President Lyndon Johnson Dec. 20, 1963, and has carried forward each year since.
Newnan CPR proclaimed in 2013 we would offer “Free Hands-Only CPR” training (non-certification courses) in February. Yes, we are doing it again in 2023! All areas in South Atlanta and West Georgia that would let us, and provide teaching facilities.
American Heart Association estimates worldwide deaths from cardiovascular disease will grow to 23 million by 2030.
Slightly less than 1,000 people per day suffer sudden cardiac arrest in the U.S. Most of them pass away. Cardiac arrest is the full stoppage of heart function. Most resuscitation experts believe 2/3 of people having cardiac arrest could survive. But, it would take bystanders quickly performing CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), and fast use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) to shock the victim’s heart back to a normal rhythm. Ultimately, that is why Damar Hamlin survived his cardiac arrest, and Lisa Marie Presley did not.
That’s why we do this (non-certification) training during February. We simply hope to try to move towards that 2/3 goal of cardiac arrest survival. Training includes CPR, choking and using an AED. You won’t get an AHA certification card to carry in your wallet. You will learn the life-saving skills of CPR and how to help someone that is choking.
