The Case for AEDs in SChools

Most people think heart attacks/cardiac arrests only happen to those over 60.

In fact, over 7,000 kids under 18 die each year from cardiac arrest.  Most do not have heart disease or clogged arteries, but are generally healthy, even athletes.  Cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death on school property, with one student athlete falling victim to SCA every three to four days (not at the same school – that’s nationwide).

A great case for schools to have AEDs, and carry them to basketball and football practice and games.

Matt Keene was a 17 year old high school football player in NH, had cardiac arrest in 2008.
